About Us

Hi there! We are Tim and Anne Hall, retired “50-somethings” from Nova Scotia, Canada. In 2016 we rented out our house, sold our car and nearly all of our belongings and started the next stage of our life with a whole new attitude. The only possessions we have left fit into our two suitcases and knapsacks and a few bins in storage.

With started with no particular end destination and are travelling to see and experience as much of the world as we can – only very slowly. We have a modest fixed income so we’ve had to look carefully at how we can accomplish our goals and we’d love to share our story and some of what we experience and learn along the way.

  1. Congratulations! Changing our lives and chucking it all was the best decision we ever made and I wish you lots of luck and happiness! We did the same thing you’re in the process of doing from August 2011 to August 2012 and took off in September that year to begin our travels in Mexico, Central and South America, then to Curacao and the Dominican Republic before heading to Europe where we are now. No regrets and I’ll bet you two will be saying the same thing! Anita

Thanks Anita for the note of support. We are really looking forward to this next chapter in our lives and are ready for it. We have enjoyed reading about your travels over the past few years and it was very inspirational in helping us come to the realization that we can do this. We wish both of you all the best in your new home base in Lagos and perhaps our paths will cross in the future. Cheers. Tim & Anne

  2. Hi Tim and Anne, nice to meet you. How fabulous that you’re following your dream. If your experience turns out to be anything like ours, it will be better than you could have imagined. One thing we’ve learned is that there are no wrong decisions.
You’ve fuelled my desire to see Costa Rica!
Thanks for following our blog. I hope you enjoy the stories of our journey. And don’t be strangers – come on over and join the conversation.
    Cheers, and happy travels

Thanks Alison for your words of support. We have enjoyed reading the stories of your travels and especially appreciated your open attitudes towards learning and experiencing life. We have been amazed at how many people have undertaken similar journeys and this has heightened our belief that we can do this! We are very much aligned with your perspectives of letting it unfold as you go and are trying hard not to over-plan. Costa Rica holds a special place in our hearts. All the best to you and Don and we look forward to being part of your conversations. Cheers, Tim & Anne

  3. How exciting, Tim and Anne. You are going to love your new life. We lived and worked overseas for many years and fell in love with travel. It became our way of life. A few years back we went through a process very similar to yours – the downsizing, selling … and more selling. It felt so good … and we never looked back 🙂 Now we’re free to travel when and where we want. So excited for you as you transition to your new life. What destinations are on your “Must-See List?” All the best, Terri

Thank you Terri for the encouragement. We love your story. High school sweethearts fulfilling their dreams and travelling the world together. What’s not to love about that! We are through most of the selling except our very empty house which we hope will sell soon. Our “Must-See List” is pretty long and varied. We’re planning some initial healing time in Costa Rica but we haven’t decided yet between Italy, Spain or Portugal this fall. It is hard to come to the realization that we have these choices. Cheers, Tim & Anne

Really looking forward to following your adventures… I have an ‘itch’ to do the same but hubby is not quite convinced…LOL! Maybe in time… Meanwhile, I will live vicariously through you and others living the nomadic lifestyle! 😄

How do you work your health insurance? Do you not have to come back to Canada for six mos. of the year?

Hi Fran. I (Tim) chose to keep my health insurance when I retired (federal government) so we are covered when we are in Canada. We have to pay an additional premium however as we do not have any Provincial coverage because we don’t return for six months of the year. So whenever we are out of the country we have to buy health insurance if we want coverage. We go through World Nomads (https://www.worldnomads.com/) but they will only cover us until we reach 60.

I have just found your blog and now catching up with your blog posts. My husband and I are talking early retirement this year, our house is for sale and we are buying a much smaller property to keep it as our UK base. The whole process has been stressful, but we hope that it will be worth it, it is a big world to see😄

Hi Gilda. You’re right in that it is stressful once you have made the decision to take the big steps necessary to make it all work. Once we had made the commitment our biggest problem was selling our house. We have been doing this for a year now and we have loved the freedom and the opportunity to explore at our own pace. We are considering setting up a base in Portugal and are starting that process now. We wish you both all the best and hope that you enjoy your new lifestyle as much as we are. Hopefully you’ll find some help in some of our experiences. Thanks for stopping by. Tim & Anne
